Jesper Lundgaard was born 1954 in Hillerød,
Denmark. He started playing bass at the age of 16.
He studied musical science at Aarhus University from 1976. As a member of Bent Eriksens
trio he was active on the local jazzscene in Aarhus performing with a.m.o. Dexter Gordon, Harry Sweets Edison, Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Joe Newman, Benny Waters,
Hal Singer, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Pepper Adams, Howard McGhee, Roy Eldridge, Doug
and Jimmy Raney and was also playing with Danes like Thomas Clausen, Alex Riel, Niels Jørgen Steen, Svend Erik Nørregaard,
Aage Tanggaard, Finn Ziegler, Jesper Thilo, Jørgen Emborg, Lars Togeby and Jan Zum Vohrde.
In 1978 he became a member of Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra and toured
for 3 months with this band all over Scandinavia and Europe. Here he met
a.m.o. Bob Rockwell, Jim McNeely and Dick Oates.
In 1979 he moved to Copenhagen where he is living now.
He became house player for 3 years in the club La Fontaine and also
performed in clubs like Montmartre and Slukefter with people like Benny Carter, Teddy Wilson, Jay McShann, Dorothy Donegan, Phineas Newborn, Mose Allison, Bud Johnson,
Started recording for SteepleChase in 1979 and recorded almost 40 albums
on this label. Other companies like Storyville and the Dutch Criss Cross
has released albums with Lundgaard. On Storyville with a.m.o. Benny Carter
and Teddy Wilson. A couple of Japanese companies has released material
with a.m.o. Chet Baker og Duke Jordan.
Lundgaard was through the 80's a member of the Danish Radio Jazz Group, Ernie Wilkins Allmost Bigband,
and Thad Jones' Danish Big Band Eclipse. Also played and toured 5 times in
Japan with Duke Jordan. He has been touring large parts of the World with
different American musicians, periods in Helsingfors with UMO bigband,
long tours in Holland, France and Germany with Doug og Jimmy Raney. Tours
with Tommy Flanagan and Ed Thigpen. In the mid 80's with Bob Rockwell Quartet
incl. Butch Lacy and Jukkis Uotila.
1989 member of The Danish Radio Bigband. From 1992 and still ongoing
with Svend Asmussen Quartet.
In 9994 he formed The Repertory Quartet - they released 6 albums the
next 6 years, each with a dedicated repertoire. Lundgaard has toured in
the 90's for long periods as a member of Hank Jones Trio with Idris Muhammed
He has until now participated on more than 400 albums, played in almost
all of the different jazz styles, and been very active as a studiomusician
on radio, TV, og films.
Lundgaard has since 1987 been active as a sound engineer with his own Loft
Studio, where he has produced app. 40 albums.
He also teaches and has given masterclasses
at Conservatories i Rotterdam, Zürich and the Sibelius Academy in Helsingfors.
He is at the moment a member of Danish bands like A-team, Christina Nielsen Quartet, Thomas Clausen Trio
and Ernie Wilkins Allmost Bigand. Also plys with Svedish Anders Windmark Quartet, Jan Lundgreen, Putte Wickmann, Arne Domnerus, Rune Gustavsson
and Ulf Johansson.
Lundgaard has recieved the JASA prize and the Ben Webster prize.
